Morocco Unveils $2.9B Rail Revolution Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco is making bold moves on the railway front! The Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) has sealed a jaw-dropping $2.9 billion deal to acquire 168 trains from global heavyweights in France, Spain, and South Korea.

This is all part of an ambitious expansion project to upgrade the country’s rail infrastructure ahead of the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.

The game-changing agreement is set to transform Morocco’s transport sector, doubling the number of cities linked by rail by 2040 and covering a staggering 87% of the country’s population. If you thought Morocco’s high-speed train was already impressive, wait till you see what’s coming next!

Breaking it down, France’s Alstom will deliver 18 high-speed trains to boost intercity transport, while Spain’s CAF has secured a contract for 40 intercity trains to enhance mobility across major regions. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem will supply a massive 110 urban trains, further strengthening public transportation within Morocco’s bustling cities.

But that’s not all—the funding structure for this mega project is equally impressive. France, Spain, and South Korea have agreed to provide concessionary financing, making it easier for Morocco to execute its ambitious railway expansion plans without straining national resources.

With the 2030 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Morocco is leaving no stone unturned in upgrading its infrastructure, making travel smoother and more efficient for both citizens and visitors. This deal signals Morocco’s determination to position itself as a leading transport hub in Africa, setting the stage for an ultra-modern railway network.

Stay tuned as Morocco accelerates towards a new era of rail transport, connecting more cities and improving mobility like never before!
